OCD is wrapping you up in its story
The thoughts, images, impulses, or feelings you experience don’t align with your beliefs and values. Some thoughts may be uncomfortable or disturbing in nature and you’ve not shared them with anyone because you are worried what others will think. Your thoughts feel intrusive, uncontrollable, and overwhelming. To ease the anxiety and distress you experience from your thoughts you engage behaviors, rituals, or mental reviewing/reassurance. You may find that these behaviors are time consuming and interfere with daily life and relationships.
Self-grooming habits have become time consuming or painful
When a blemish appears on your skin, you need to remove it. If a hair is out of place or feels different then the rest, you may pull it. When you notice a hang nail or a broken nail, you bite or pick it to remove it. Often, you find yourself doing this for more than a couple of minutes, as a way to fix a perceived flaw, sooth an uncomfortable emotion, or when you are bored.
You no longer want to act on the urge to do these behaviors and have tried stopping on your own but have found it difficult.
Anxiety is a constant presence and influence
You find yourself replaying conversations and interactions, wondering what you could have done differently. You spend more time than you’d like planning for what might happen, only for it to never happen. You worry about what others may think of you, the things you say, or how you act.
The coping skills you once used and relied on no longer provide the same level of relief. You’ve fallen into habits that feel soothing, but you recognize may need to be addressed because they are also signs of anxiety.
